See the quick before you cut. A small LED beside the stainless steel blades shines through the claw, which makes the pink quick easier to spot on lighter nails. Trim a little at a time and stop well short of it. A clear cover over the blades catches the clippings, so there are fewer bits on the floor.

Smooth finish in the same tool. Turn it round and the other end is an electric grinder. Use it to round off sharp edges after clipping, or to shorten nails gradually on dogs that prefer filing. A cap with small and medium openings guides the claw, and a second LED lights up the drum.

Simple to live with. The handle has a firm, ribbed grip and a lock that keeps the blades closed in a drawer or bag. A small display shows how much battery is left, and it charges by USB-C.

Who it suits. These dog nail clippers are designed for small, medium and large dogs. The supplier advises they are not suited to very large breeds such as Malamutes.
